After renovation
What happens when a little creativity, a lot of community support and a shared appreciation for educators come together? At Northeast Middle School, the answer is a staff lounge transformation that is giving teachers a whole new reason to take a break.
In August, PrincipalsConnect partnered with HGTV Design Star Jennifer Bertrand and JE Dunn Young Professionals to give Northeast Middle School's staff lounge a remarkable makeover. The space, which had largely gone unused by staff, was reimagined into a bright, welcoming retreat filled with personality.
Before renovation
The transformation brought plenty of new life to the room, including a vibrant mural, wallpaper, a fireplace and even a massage chair. But the best part wasn't the design reveal. It was watching educators walk into a space created just for them.
As Jennifer Bertrand shared, seeing teachers realize the space was made with love for them was her favorite part of the project. And the reaction said it all.
For PrincipalsConnect, this project represents something much bigger than a beautiful room. Teacher well-being is at the heart of our work, and we know that supporting educators means paying attention to the environments where they spend their days. Teachers give so much of themselves to their students and school communities. They deserve spaces where they can pause, recharge, connect with colleagues and feel appreciated.
As one Northeast Middle School staff member shared, teachers need a good place to sit down after spending the day on their feet in classrooms. It's a simple reminder that sometimes the most meaningful support starts with recognizing the everyday needs of educators.
This renovation also marks the seventh staff lounge transformation completed by PrincipalsConnect in Kansas City schools. Each project is made possible through partnerships with people and organizations who believe educators deserve to feel supported, valued and cared for.
